Cocktail Recipe: Call Me Alabama

Blog

This cocktail combines Dread River gin with freshly squeezed lime juice, orgeat syrup, olive oil, and an egg white to create the Call Me Alabama. The orgeat syrup—named for the French word 'orge,' meaning barley—was traditionally a barley-almond blend. The more modern version is a sweet syrup made from almonds, sugar, and rose water or orange flower water. The freshly squeezed lime juice balances this sweetness. And added to cocktails since the 1860s, egg whites give cocktails a frothy, rich foam, that not only looks great but contains a creaminess carrying the botanical, citrus, sweet almond notes of the cocktail. Bartenders also note that egg whites and olive oil add a certain structure to cocktails in volume and mouthfeel.

Finally, Anchoring the Call Me Alabama cocktail is our Dread River Gin. Made from a 100% Red Winter Wheat base, we vapor-infuse our gin with a mix of nine herbs and botanicals. Employing a contemporary style, we use minimal juniper and our gin blooms with floral and citrus notes.

"People who don't really drink gin try our gin and say that they love it," says Dread River General Manager Suzanne Cisneros. "It's got a really nice, approachable flavor profile on the palate and in the finish. And, of course, the nose has all those heady botanicals."
